The Rocky Mountain Region's premier positive youth development conference is back!

The Voices of Strength PreConference Institute and Conference will be held May 1-3, 2008 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, CO. This conference, designed for youth and adults, provides attendees with a chance to learn and experience how real people in diverse communities blend positive youth development with effective prevention strategies in culturally competent ways to reduce risk behaviors and prepare youth for success at home, school, and career and in life.

Each week the Voices of Strength team will feature one exciting aspect of the Voices of Strength Conference. Check back regularly!

  Enhance your conference experience with one of seven PreConference Offerings
  In Colorado, and across the nation, service-learning is gaining strength as a vehicle for promoting youth development, citizenship, and academic achievement for all youth. Connect with leaders in service learning at The 15th Annual Colorado Conference on Service Learning.

Join Voices of Strength keynote speaker DeVone Boggan in a discussion of mentoring best practices that will enhance your mentoring program for all participants. Boggan will challenge you to Dare to Create Asset Rich Mentoring Communities.

Recent studies show that 1 in 4 teens are having or have had thoughts of suicide. In the GLBTQ Youth; Teen Suicide Risk and Prevention training you will learn steps to help young people open up and talk about all issues that they are facing as well as identify signs to help keep them safe from suicide.

Come learn about how Denver Public High Schools are on the path to creating innovative programs focused on multiple pathways to graduation and youth success at Multiple Pathways to Graduation: Engaging the Community. This session will be followed by a special screening of the new documentary, First Person, directed by Voices of Strength keynote speaker Benjamin Herold.

Engaging diverse youth and families is the goal, but effective strategies are often missing. The Spirit of Culture – Exploring Cultural Competency will help participants learn how cultural competence, when linked to youth development, can be effective in developing positive relationships with young people.

Presented by Voices of Strength keynote speaker Sarah Schulman, Youth and Adult Partnerships: The Rules of Engagement is an interactive session exploring the how-to of youth-adult engagement and presenting different inter-generational collaborative models.

In addition to these great learning sessions there is an opportunity to join a growing collaborative of stakeholders from around Denver at Connecting the Dots: Bringing Services to Youth & Families to focus on enhancing services for students impacted by transitions in their Denver Public Schools’ communities.
