Cherry Creek School District Breaks Down Barriers to Youth Engagement
Youth engagement is a priority in the Cherry Creek School District, where 80 members of a Youth Advisory Council serve as youth ambassadors and are instrumental in planning a Youth-Adult Summit each spring. The 4th Annual Youth-Adult Summit taking place at Grandview High School near Parker, CO, will help to build the strong youth/adult relationships characteristic of an asset-rich community.

The Youth-Adult Summits are powerful. Through youth-driven appeals and presentations, the attendees‹both young and old‹leave committed to bridging the generation gap and making their community a better place. At a previous Youth-Adult Summit, the participants came up with this pledge:

"We are a community of individuals striving for a respectful and caring environment. This will be accomplished through understanding and acceptance of every individual in our community. Make a difference!"

This year nationally recognized motivational speaker, Mark Scharenbroich, will be the featured guest, and the Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre Program's cast will lead a workshop on creative approaches to issues important to youth, including family communication, integrity and peer pressure. Students have also planned and will facilitate several workshops to improve youth-adult communication, mutual respect and partnerships.
